Your Participation The band has recently changed its focus from playing around town at different retirement facilities and community venues to offering a regular concert schedule at set Concert Halls. With that said, there will be a greater need to make every rehearsal as productive as possible. There will be a lot more music to master in a shorter period of time. Rehearsals should NOT be viewed as personal “practice” time but rather as “rehearsals’ designed to putting the style, phrasing, articulations, interpretation and musicality together with the entire ensemble. It is each individual’s responsibility to know their individual parts prior to attending rehearsal to ensure 100% focus on the directors instructions
Personal Musical Responsibility: It is each individual members responsibility to learn and know their individual part. Taking your folder home AND practicing are STRONGLY encouraged; however, if you will not be present for the next rehearsal or concert, it is imperative you leave your folder with your section leader or the music librarian. If you find that you cannot be present for a rehearsal or concert, please make every effort to return your folder to a band member, preferably in your section or call (941) 363-1237 so someone can make arrangements to get the folder from you! Attendance is essential to any performing group! Please make every effort to be at each rehearsal and on time!

Annual Membership Dues Each member is responsible for a $50 annual membership dues. This is due within the first 30 days of your membership. The Board of Directors have voted on this to help with the costs of renting rehearsal and performance venues, the ongoing purchase of new music, insurance costs, etc. For new or returning members, you will also need to purchase the embroidered black logo dress shirt for $25 in addition to the band membership dues.
A typical rehearsal Starting on time is essential! While the rehearsal begins at 7:00pm sharp, call time for rehearsal is 6:45pm so you have time to collect any new music passed out for the rehearsal and have time to organize your music to the rehearsal line up for the evening. Many times, it also takes time to re-organize the seating arrangements due to participation. Please make every effort to arrive early so you are prepared and ready for the downbeat at 7:00pm. At starting time, the Director steps to the podium, the band members chatter should cease at that time and your full attention given to the director.
Rehearsal will always begin with a period of warm-up exercises. Just as it is important for an athlete to warm-up before a game, so too, a musician’s warm-up is extremely important to ensure proper musical sounds, techniques, balance and blend. Following the warm-up, the band will be tuned to the principal clarinet (the bandmaster). During your musical rest or while the director is working with different sections, it is your responsibility to pay close attention to instructions and your measures for proper entrance and style techniques requested.
To make this a success and fun for all, we encourage a willingness to play any part as needed to maintain optimal balance of each section, without objection.
Section leaders responsibilities: Your Section Leader is responsible for making sure all the parts are being covered at all times. Your section leader, in consultation with the director, will determine who plays the various parts. If at any time you feel you would like to be playing a different part, please consult your section leader first. They will discuss this with the director, after which either an audition or some other means of qualifying you for that position you are requesting will take place.
Sectional practices may be announced through the season. This helps to reduce the time during the rehearsal going over difficult passages, and where decisions as to solos can be made. Generally, we like to meet one hour before the full band rehearsal. This depends largely on the particular facility as to whether we have access to other rooms in addition to the main hall.
The Band Board All Board of Director Meetings are open to any and all current band members. We encourage you to participate with this important aspect of the organization whenever possible. Many decisions are made as to the direction of the band; Concert venues, Fundraising ideas, marketing, etc.
